People know little the difference between Fashion and Style. Fashion is an industry. Every industry’s purpose is to make money. In the case of Fashion, human insecurity is the target trait which then defines the target audience. The company’s make all of us feel like we shouldn’t know how to express ourselves so they can come sell it to us. Fashion comes and goes, it’s entire premise is built on temporary trends for the masses. What’s now “hot” isn’t after a season and of course you buy more and more each and every time. Any person of collective artistry and conscious self being would be disgusted at the idea. It is a direct offspring of Capitalism mirroring traits of Communism in it’s factory based delivery of what companies think people should look like from season to season. I do appreciate the talents of the designers but we all know that the lines they put out are not their real artwork. They are just consumer products inspired by them.
Style is a permanent way of expression someone chooses to commit themselves to. It is unique to an individual which surpasses the way one looks into the boundaries of the way they think, act and -believe. Style is often developed depending on the dedicated lifestyles a person or a group leads, which after becoming iconic, Fashion then steals and sells it to the masses. Men in the desert wrapped in scarves and cloth is style. Tribes painting themselves with pigmented mud is style. True vagabond punks and their worn out clothes are style, because it developed from not having a place to stay or buy new clothes, it was a part of the way they lived. We all know how this turned into “stone wash jeans” purposely made to look like as if it was aged. That’s the difference between Fashion and Style.
People I know who have the best style make their clothes out of cheap pieces of cloth and wear them in ways unimaginable. It’s like their mind translated into the way they look and there’s a certain sense of bravery in being able to commit to such behavior. That is exactly the point where Style’s boundaries crosses into character. You can’t have Style without character, as you can’t step out of the boundaries of the norm without bravery. The amazing thing is the way this translation happens on every person is so different and that is what’s truly beautiful. It’s not what’s hot, it’s what they are. It is watching human soul come alive.
I either make all my clothes and I rip out the name tags of the ones that I buy. I am not a walking advertisement. To think that there are people who actually see the carrying of a company’s name on their chest as a disclaimer of social status further emphasizes the need to clarify the difference between Fashion and Style. I see people walking around with their Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Gucci, Marc Jacobs what have you, right across the chest, only makes me think; “Wow, props to those companies, but you’re kind of an idiot”. If you follow Fashion you can’t have true Style. What you look like only comes from the selection made available to you by the -Companies. Companies, yes. Corporations. I got Style. Fuck Fashion.
Here is a great interview I gave to StyleLikeU a while back. They are great, check them out and all the interesting individuals you will see in there. Your eyes will open.

A guy once thought he was being so great because he got me a Gucci shirt. It had colors that reminded me of burger. The tan, red, and evergreen made my eyes want to puke needless to say I agree completely with this one. Wearing a label across your chest/ass does not mean you have style and look good. You can wear all the top designer clothes you want, but still look like crap.
If anything, I think it heightens the likelihood.
It’s just a simpleton’s understanding of looking good; pay for it.
Again, agree. However the college paper-writer in me wants to correct your grammar SO bad.
For those of us who are not creative, thrift stores and a little improvisation make all the difference. Why buy brand-new and labeled, when there’s generators of gaudy garments that are still clean and wearable to sift through? It’s like a treasure hunt.
That and being the size of a pixie means major fashion labels do not care you exist. Short? Have hips? What about arm/leg muscle? Lol, no name-brand clothes for you.
They also forget you exist if you are plus size as well.Lets not forget this as well.
I’ve seen some actual stores pop up to service curvy and/or overweight women, a la Torrid or Rainbow. I wonder what happens if you’re shorter AND wider than average? That would be bad luck.
Midna, I don’t think you have to be creative. You just have to be yourself, that exposes any kind of creativity you thought you didnt have.
That is actually a very sweet statement.
I was brought here through Sarahs blog which i follow religiously and i am glad that i took her recomendation. ive been looking for some new material to follow that is morethan your average run of the mill blog. Hi Brea
Welcome, you are in for a ride! Make sure to subscribe to the blog on the homepage. I <3 Sarah
I just hope those men in the desert, all the vagabond punks and every African tribesman understands how important it is to know the difference between “style” and “fashion.” <3
I wonder how you say “smartass” in any African language <3
When I came to the US, one of the things that thoroughly confused me was why a shirt was suddenly worth $50 more just because it had “Hollister” written across it. I get how it works now, but I still find it bewildering that people are willing to pay more just to look like everybody else. I prefer corsets and leather, and looking like a modern day vampire, thank you very much. Though the tribal-feral-warrior aesthetic is also pretty stellar so two thumbs up for pulling it off so well.
Lamia they have the exact same thing in every other country, even possibly more so than the US. I’m fro Turkey born and raised and let me tell you; Fashion brand cheese fest
Mmm cheese.
.
Lol I come from Bangladesh, which is a lot more third-world and a lot less Westernized. The norm is to design your own outfits and have the tailor make them because tailoring is dirt cheap. Most people there would probably think Gucci is some sort of food. So some countries are still untouched
and that is awesome.
